TWIL: Mitch McConnell had polio

When Senator Lindsey Graham died suddenly this morning I turned on the news to check if there was a breach in Senator McConnell’s news blockade, because if both of the President’s right-hand men die in short succession then the opponents on the left will get the side-eye. That was a dizzying string of words, and if you don’t follow the news it’s a bad way to find out that two Southern senators are out of commission in a very divided Senate.

Anyway, after I heard the President speak very coherently about Sen. Graham, the news shifted to Sen. McConnell, and I saw the closed captioning mentioned his childhood polio.

Well, I had no idea Senator Mitch McConnell had polio as a child, like my Mom. He got it at the age of 2, in 1944, about the same time Mom got it … well, the same time almost everyone who survived polio got it, in that slice of time after Sister Kenny and iron lungs but before the vaccine.

That man most certainly has post-polio syndrome, so I imagine his lungs are starting to die.

Of course, that’s solved (in MY head anyway). Now there’s just the mystery of what killed Lindsey Graham.

  1. McConnell’s status of “Schroedinger’s death” and L. Graham’s demise — I find it all rather freaky. Maybe that’s because we also have a gigantic sinkhole right in front of our local hospital. The Common Household Husband makes jokes about it being a passage to the underworld, but… what if it IS?!?!

At first I thought the news about Graham was fake. Any time I have an over-the-top reaction to astounding news, I will need proof the news is real.

I vaguely knew that Mitch McComplicitFace had polio. It boggles my mind that anyone who suffered with that would be so completely misanthropic. But maybe suffering just makes some people power-hungry.

  2. CHM – The memes have been epic today. My favorite is the shot of Mitch in the hospital bed holding the paper with his wife by his side and the caption is “99% sure the Mitch McConnell in this photo is cake.”

  3. Jessica Fantastica – I did see that she died. It’s important to know you can exit the iron lung when you need to eat or do eating-related things. But usually there’s a nurse there to help.
