Skunk 2025

Gary woke me up with “I SAW THE MOST AMAZING THING LAST NIGHT.”

I was expecting a meteorite, or an owl, but he continued, “AN ALMOST PURE WHITE SKUNK.”

“Aw,” I said.

“IT LET ME GET RIGHT NEXT TO IT.”

“What? How close to it did you get?”

“IT WAS 12 INCHES AWAY FROM MY FOOT.”

I said, “ARE YOU INSANE?”

And he defended his behavior, saying that he would have run if the skunk started its five-step defensive maneuver dance, and that won’t happen anyway, because he sees this skunk all the time so the skunk knows him.

I said, “Oh, well then, What’s his name? Does he have children?” And then, “Seriously, you are sleeping outside if you get sprayed.”

  1. I think that is reasonable, a “you sleep elsewhere if you get too close to a skunk and it sprays you” official mandate. That said, where *would* he stay until he didn’t stink?

  2. Nooooooo, not a skunk! I agree that your rule for the person the skunk has sprayed is quite fair.
I would love to see an owl in the wild. But pretty sure I wouldn’t want to be close to it.

  3. Common Household Mom – They are hard to see because they are so silent. No flapping. Just gliding. We have an owl sanctuary here and the staff made one fly right over my head. If I were prey I’d have no idea it was there.
