I woke up. “Alexa, what day is it?” I shrieked.
“It is August 10th.”
So I told her it was my birthday. I waited a moment, asked again, and she again said it was August 10.
“Hey Siri, what day is it?”
“It is the tenth of August.”
“Is it a special day?”
“Do you want me to use ChatGPT to answer that?”
“Yeah sure.”
“It is International Biodiesel Day.”
I asked ChatGPT why all my devices seemed to have forgotten my birthday. It said it might not be in my calendar, or else system updates might have affected it.
Then it wished me a happy birthday. So I suppose AI can learn.
It’s a little brutal to have the devices ignore my day, especially because I have been wished a happy early birthday indirectly by the screens at the neurologist, the blood lab, and the pharmacy. (Evidently a little cake with candles pops up.)
I’m sure Facebook will do its job and remind other humans as per usual. You can always count on Facebook.

When Youngest Son was an active Facebook user he had a fake birthday on the site. He said it was funny to see who remembered the actual date and who used the made up one.
Happy birthday! We usually get a postcard bulk-mailed from insurance [it’s not even postmarked from our local agent’s city, so I assume there’s a state-wide warehouse somewhere that does the data export and printing for each week’s batch of insurance customer birthdays]; it’s very special. /s
I’d rather not have my machines wishing me a happy birthday, on the whole, but if one is accustomed to it, I could see it being annoying/disconcerting!

As it so happens, my birthday is coming up soon. I expect to get birthday wishes from various businesses / medical practices who wish to part me from my money, similar to KC getting a lovely postcard from the insurance co.
Yesterday I received in the mail a lovely rainbow scarf, with no sender named. It’s possible that I ordered it myself, but so long ago I forgot.
I set facebook to not show my birthday publicly.
CHM – I like getting the Facebook wishes, only now it lets you take a shortcut where you don’t even have to type a word. I like being able to tell who took the shortcut.
