TWIL: Training wheels

I just told you about how I used training wheels to learn to ride a bike. Evidently training wheels are not the thing anymore. (Because they teach children that if you stop pedaling the bike will just naturally stop on its own and not crash into elderly gentlemen’s backsides? I do not know.)

Instead, kids in this millennium use balance bikes. They claim to be superior to training wheels because they teach one how to avoid tipping over.

I haven’t seen any around the neighborhood, but I might not be paying attention. I vow to pay greater attention to children on bikes in the future.

  1. I’ve seen a few kids on them – they’re really neat, but they were also kind of… limited in range? Montessori/rich/hippie-range, or so. Maybe they have expanded their reach now; it’s been a while.
