TWIL: Cipro Can Kill You

Gary’s guilt over the bladder infection drove him to the Facebook and the internet, and he came back with news that a common antibiotic used for bladder infections, Cipro, can destroy your tendons and probably even kill you.

“They stopped giving me Cipro years ago,” I said. “You know, probably because of the tendon thing.”

Gary didn’t care. He went on quoting the scholarly papers he read and detailing the many ways you can die from Cipro.

I tried to join in. “They give Cipro to people who’ve been in contact with Anthrax.” (Specifically Tom Brokaw’s assistant, if I recall.)

“Well, those people are going to die anyway.” And then he carried on for another ten minutes on Antibiotics: the Secret Killers.

So, storing that away if anyone tries to kill me with Cipro, I guess.

  1. … yeah, they still give me Cipro occasionally, for behold, I am under 60, and guess what? It has not yet killed me or my tendons.
And ~30 cases per year, given how many people are dosed with cipro+co annually, is… not that bad. (see the cipro numbers alone: https://clincalc.com/DrugStats/Drugs/Ciprofloxacin )
(I do try to avoid antibiotics where feasible; if something is maybe viral or maybe bacterial, I’ll wait it out. But also, given the choice between a continued UTI or death, I’d generally pick death, thanks; my system is oversensitized so it is just a phenomenal amount of pain plus vomiting, and when cipro can zap it, then just… no, we’re taking cipro. Or whatever.)
That said, it’s good to know that if I experience tendon pain while on cipro, I should stop everything before the tendon ruptures! Useful PSA… also not a reason for me to stop taking cipro when needed.
