…well, at least my retired husband.
I thought when husbands retire, the biggest problem is boredom. They have too much time on their hands, then they have to start projects around the house or have affairs.
I haven’t seen that with Gary. Instead, he has issues because now that he’s retired he doesn’t get to be an expert any more. He hates not knowing as much or more than the next guy, and now the next guy is usually an actual expert – a car mechanic, a doctor, a cable installer.
So now I have scheduled into every day a fifteen minute period of sitting on a footstool literally at my husband’s knee so he can explain things to me.
If I know we’re going to be encountering an expert I try to remind Gary that the expert is only an expert in one field – when it comes to breadth of knowledge Gary wins, with his expertise on physics, animal behavior, cooking, etc..
It’s exhausting, but better than having him start projects around the house.
