In addition to the impending improvements in the side yard, the backyard needs so much work I cannot even begin to think about it. I only know one thing: the patio has dropped six inches and that is exposing the dining room subfloor to the elements.
That’s the only known thing. The rest of the backyard is up for grabs.
- It needs a raccoon feeding station and play area.
- It needs a raccoon highway so no one needs to jump the fence when there’s a raccoon in crisis.
- If I decide to get rid of the trumpet vine (the official weed of Missouri), the vine bed needs to be encased in concrete. Only way to defeat a trumpet vine.
- It needs a cactus garden in the back corner where the sprinkler doesn’t quite reach, where last year I planted sedum that the rabbits ate in a day.
- It needs a special shrine where I can house the parental ashes that are currently under the brass sundial. Ask me where the brass sundial is. I don’t know: it has been overgrown by Lamb’s Ears the past five years.

That thing you know seems like a very good place to start. Molding/warping of structural elements wins out over external visual things (even playful raccoons!) any day.
Also, I had no idea rabbits ate sedum. You learn something new every day… Maybe you could put some nice rocks back there?
KC – well, rabbits were spotted back there and sedum was gone. I made assumptions.
I don’t know of anything else that eats sedum, and rabbits do eat almost anything green if they’re hungry enough, so I think your assumptions are justified? Unless you have a neighbor who really really hates sedum or really really likes pranking you, I guess…
KC – given all the raccoons we bring to the yard, I wouldn’t blame my neighbors for pranking.
