Gary had a backyard adventure. A hawk swooped down on a bird, looked Gary dead in the eye, then flew off with the bird body.
After the emotional trauma abated, we had a conversation on why the hawk wouldn’t be preying on somethin meatier, like … a rabbit, and we realized we haven’t seen a rabbit in our yard all year, if not longer.
Come to find out it’s all over St. Louis. The Great St. Louis Rabbit Die-Off. The Rabbit Rapture.
The big die-off was in South Saint Louis a few years ago, but I can imagine the fever might have made its way to our backyard. Seriously, I haven’t seen a rabbit all spring.
Then again, perhaps it’s the hawk. Maybe the hawk’s been dining on bunny.

There was the great squirrel die off in my neighborhood a couple of years ago and the bunny die-off this year. I attribute it to the great cat influx coupled with a really hard winter.
Lucky the bunnies are so prolific. Don’t know about the squirrels, though.
Are you sure all the bunnies are dead? Based on my neighbourhood, maybe they just emigrated.
Becs – It was a hard winter, plus, I just noticed a new mole hill. They may have been evicted.
Hattie – Oh they are. I just saw four squirrels in a two foot space yesterday morning. Gross.
Alison – I understand from Friend #4 they’ve moved 4 miles away and are eating her garden.
