Weather update

For those following CNN – there was a tornado in my area. If neighborhood rumor is to be believed it hit two blocks from us. I refuse to go look.

A stately oak tree came entirely up out of the ground in our back yard. And another is leaning on the house. I don’t think the roof is damaged.

It’s been two hours and the emergency vehicle sirens have just started to die down. Two of the three streets to our neighborhood have been closed. The police are barricading the one that would lead to the flattened houses.

When it really began to storm I peeked out the front window, then I talked Gary into going down to the basement. On the way to the basement HE looked out the front and yelled “my God, look at this!”

Worst straight line winds I have ever seen, like a hurricane. We both ran to the basement.

In about ten minutes we both really really had to use the bathroom.

So I guess that’s why people are advised to hide in the bathroom, because there’s a toilet conveniently placed there for when you are afraid.

So the whole neighborhood is out, sharing rumors and offering help and competing for the worst tree damage (I think we won).

Photos later.

  1. Wow! Glad you came through it unscathed, tree excepted. Bet you were kind of wishing though that you’d left an untidy corner of junk in the basement, eh, with stacks of old papers or rags or other absorbent materials.

  2. Big dot – we store the toilet paper we’ve bought on sale it the basement, so I could have made do.
Kristin – yeesh I’m glad too.

  3. Magpie- me too. I have gone an entire day without announcing to Gary “an F3 tornado went through our backyard.”
