In Which I am Wrong and Gary is Right

“YOU ARE NOT SEEING DRAIN FLIES IN YOUR ROOM,” Gary bellowed. “ALL THE DRAIN FLIES ARE DEAD.”

“Well, no,” I said mildly.

“NO WHAT YOU ARE SEEING ARE FUNGUS GNATS FROM THE POTTED PLANT IN YOUR ROOM.”

“Well, no,” I again said mildly.

“I WILL PROVE IT TO YOU.”

Damn it. You can even see how they climbed up the yellow flypaper from the moss at the bottom.

So strange that we would have two separate small flying insect infestations at the same time, though. They are two distinct animals. The drain flies were twice the size of these little guys.

“I WAS A BIOLOGY MAJOR, YOU KNOW.”

  1. 1. fungus gnats can also take up residence in drains (or anywhere there is fungus/mold for them to munch, presumably, but we had a drain+plant infestation several years ago and they SUCKED esp. since they really really like your carbon dioxide, apparently, so they keep hovering in front of peoples’ faces particularly),
    2. diatomaceous earth on the dirt fixed that part of it for us (the remainder: boiling water, repeated), and
    3. I cannot believe Gary was *right* and you were wrong (vs. he is right but you don’t have any views on it, or he has been reading too much internet, or…). Time for some sort of commemorative object?
