I saw a dark spot on the basement floor. It made me curse. I cursed as I have not cursed since 2022, when the basement became dry. Now, evidently, it is not.
I could check the sump, check the sprinkler system, check for hail damage, or I could ignore it.
The basement has smelled damp all spring. I chose to ignore it, and here is where we are. Again.
On the other hand, we are having just an absurd amount of rain. There was one time in the last few years when there was a downpour and a puddle rose up in an odd little corner. I ignored it and it went away. So there’s precedent.
It was lovely while it lasted, at least.

There’s Dry, which is a Wonderful Thing (when we’re talking about basements, not skin or reservoirs or…) and then there’s maybe also Dry Enough? and then there is Not Dry Enough (aka mold, damage to items, etc…).
May your basement be Dry Enough even if it does not manage the pinnacle of Dry, is what I’m saying…
KC – That’s a good point. I can live with a damp basement. Especially after the spring we’ve had. Maybe that’s all anyone can ask for.
I would suggest buying or borrowing a dehumidifier and see if that helps.
Kathy G – we have humidifiers. But dehumidifiers? Ooh I just looked those up on Amazon. That is the price point at which we feel hopeful.
(Just a warning that chemical dehumidifiers, if spilled, can make spots that *get* wet on the floor whenever it is more humid than average, because they selectively slurp moisture out of the air. Drove us nuts in our garage trying to figure out where this wet spot could possibly be coming from until we realized what had happened. But the “mechanical” ones that pull moisture into a tank that you empty, or send it down a pipe or whatever: not a problem)
KC – That’s good information. It’s so humid here, yet I didn’t even know there were chemical dehumidifiers.
DryZAir crystals were, I think, what spilled in our garage and later befuddled us…
KC – Thanks. That’s good to know.
