Earlier this week I was plugging away at work and heard Gary bellow, “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?” No one else was in the house, so I assumed something was “wrong” with me, and stomped out to do battle.
“What is your problem?” I demanded.
“THIS SQUIRREL JUST BIT ONE OF OUR BIRDS!”
“No,” I said gently, “Squirrels don’t bite birds.”
“THIS ASSHOLE SQUIRREL WAS BEHIND A BIRD WHO WAS EATING THE NUTS, AND I SAW IT, I SAW THE SQUIRREL REACH OUT, PIN THE BIRD’S WINGS, DRAG THE POOR BIRD BACK AND THEN THE SQUIRREL BIT THE BIRD IN THE NECK I SAW IT HAPPEN DON’T ARGUE WITH ME.”
“Did the bird bite back?”
“IT STRUGGLED AND GOT AWAY AND THE SQUIRREL RAN AWAY IN SHAME.”
Only in GaryLand. I always thought the elderly watched birds because it was peaceful.

Yeah. Nature is vicious sometimes. (But humans are probably worse in general, so there is that. It’s more calm than the news?)
(but: outside of predator relationships, a lot of it is fairly peaceful, so there is that; there is minor squabbling for better places on feeders, etc., and the annual mate/nest-site quarrels/fights, but it is mostly more serene…)
KC – Gary just posted the same story from his perspective on Facebook. There are more political references and he is gentler. There are a lot of starlings feeding their young this afternoon.
And just yesterday I saw four brown birds work together to build a nest, so no squabbling here.
