There was some fallout from the day I did not play with the cat.
The next day the cat seemed to have no interest in our usual routine. No furminating, no post-furmination petting, no coffee for me / treats for him special time. Just a glance of equal parts contempt and disinterest.
After the evening routines were ignored as well, I asked cat expert friend Anne if cats held grudges about things like that.
“Ohhh, yeah,” she said. “You are being punished.”
“How long will I be punished?”
“A day or two.”
Goldie, if asked, would have made it clear he would hate me forever. Worse, he had the nerve to demand that GARY play with him the next evening. Out of SPITE. Gary’s not the playmate. I’m the playmate. I took over and things got growly and aggressive very fast.
It is now Saturday and I am glad to say we played for fifteen minutes this morning with the second smallest ball of yarn. But I had NO idea cats could be so sensitive.

Oh, yeah, cats do that sort of thing. I’m not 100% sure why, but they 100% do. (have fun if you ever go on vacation… also lock your shoes and valuables away in closets so they do not get spite-peed in/on, and plan to not have a cat for some period of time after returning!)
KC – Oh, that is not acceptable! And Goldie’s a male, and I hear you can never get rid of the smell of male cat pee.
