Here’s what was wrong with this movie: it was not Jojo Rabbit. Motherless Brooklyn was a good movie, but I saw a great movie a few days earlier. In comparison to the laughfest/sobfest that was Jojo, this one left me flat.
It was also not Boardwalk Empire, though two prominent BE actors were cast in it.
It was also not a Martin Scorsese movie. I had attributed it to Scorsese based on the lead narration. I forgot that 1950s detective movies also have narration.
It was also not Trump: the Art of the Deal. Terry Gross on NPR said, essentially, oh, come on, a power-hungry New York developer, played by Alec Baldwin, are you saying that character isn’t Trump? The director snapped out “Nope” so fast I thought, well, he must be lying.
Gary loved it, though, and he’s usually a harsh critic.
