Yard Weeds

I have noticed a new weed poking up through our lawn and landscaping.

Weed

You know what it is? It’s a peanut plant. For just a moment I actually thought, “Huh. How did I get peanuts in my yard?”

Of course, I didn’t put the peanuts in the yard, Gary gave them to the squirrels and raccoons, and the squirrels and raccoons stashed them away for retirement. I suppose they haven’t sprouted in previous years because it hasn’t been rainy enough to soak through the shells and germinate the nut.

Though the squirrels ignore them, the raccoon use the plants as little markers where they can go and dig up nutritious peanut sprouts. After that, the mowers take care of them before they can mature enough for nuts.

(I might take one from the landscaping, protect it, and then see if I can get it to grow enough to sprout nuts. If the animals are delighted enough perhaps I can make Gary into a peanut farmer.)
