My New Power

Over the last few days people have had the nerve to push past my natural reserve and force compassion on me.

I find I have a new power. I can make these compassionate people cry. Hey, they want me to talk while I’m crying? Here’s how it feels, suckers.

This has worked on the past three people who ignored me when I waved off their concern. The nutritionist at MoBap, the pulmonary tech at Barnes, and the optician at Barnes. All of them “comforted” me until they were sobbing. One had been with her dad in the hospital, one had lost her dad to cancer, and one watched her grandfather die of post-polio syndrome.

I feel much better now when people pat my arm and ask if I’m okay – I know we are soon to reverse roles. Still, I love the pulmonary tech, who asked “Do you want some cake?”

  1. In every crying jag I’ve ever had – granted, most have been private – no one has ever asked me if I wanted cake. (The answer is always yes.)You are a mighty queen indeed.

  2. It kinda feels good to have them all crying when it started out with just you. Cake, yea, cake and ice cream, please! Tell her you love her, that’s what you’ll always remember.

  3. My grandma died really suddenly and everyone and their dog called to ask “if there was anything they could do.” and after about 3 days of this, we got tired, so the response became some reference to the funeral cost and the small savings account, and we really just need some money.Nobody cried, but boy did they shut the hell up.No sympathy, just support. No really, they’re different.

  4. Everyone – Agreed: Cake is good. (And Katie, when Mom broke her one “good” arm (the one attached to the functioning hand) the founder of my old company asked if there was anything she could do. I had learned your lesson already and suggested she make a casserole. She shut up too. And, dogs on the phone are just funny.)
