An Extension

Here was our conversation yesterday afternoon:

Ellen: “Let’s go to the Greek Festival by Forest Park, and watch Greek dancing, and eat Greek food!”

Gary (in all seriousness): “I’ve got a better idea! Let’s go to the Max and Erma’s at the mall and eat hamburgers and fries!”

Ellen (trying to reach a compromise): “Let’s go to the Greek festival, and if you don’t like it then we can go to the Max and Erma’s downtown.”

Gary: “No. It has to be the one at the mall.” Because my God, what kind of crazy food would the downtown branch of the chain have? Rattlesnake? Panda?

It isn’t like he never tries new restaurants, but he has to be in the right mood for adventure. For example, two nights ago I begged him to poke his head into the new Bella’s Italian Cuisine by the Starbucks. It was one of those fast food/slow food hybrids, where you pay $25 but you order at a counter. It got up to $25 because we had to pass judgment on the Toasted Ravioli.

(Not from Saint Louis? Read up on Toasted Ravioli on Wikipedia. When they are good, they are delectable, but when they are bad, they are a hardened square Jeno’s-pizza-roll casing of dried fried pasta with a marble of meat rattling around inside. These were not the bad ones. These were plump fresh round ravioli (a departure that screamed I AM NOT FROZEN YOU PHILISTINES) breaded with something perfect and fried all crunchy. How good? We didn’t have to even dip them in the marinara sauce. Gary ate the marinara sauce with his fork.)

But that was Friday, and it exhausted his need for foreign foods. We settled on the oh-so-exotic Applebee’s that has risen out of the ashes of the ex-Applebee’s (I asked: no one was familiar with the manager’s Buddha), followed by dessert at the Greek festival. Gary compromised on the food because as he said, “It’s still your birthday month.”

“No, I said, “August is over.”

“August sucked. You get two more weeks of birthday month. I grant you an extension.”

So, woo-hoo! Two more weeks of shirking all the chores. I imagine I’ll pay for this next March.

  1. OoOOoOOoOoO! Greek food. Yummy. We have a favorite Greek place a few miles from here. Lamb kabobs to die for. The baklava is to die for. The always give us extra meat for the dog who sits drooling in the car. Bad Gary. Applebees sucks, I won’t eat there. Never tried Max and Erma’s. I guess I have to get out more.

  2. The Max and Erma’s downtown is better than the one at the mall. I don’t know why, but it is.We also ate at Applebee’s yesterday, but chose the one by the highway. I did carryout from the new one recently and the waitress raved about the new TVs and upcoming karaoke. She claims it cost something like $10 million to build instead of $1 million. What the??? It’s average food at average prices and all that fancy technology still got my order wrong. How is Bella’s? We drove by there Friday and discussed eating there but went to Pizza Street instead. Such is life with a 3 year old.Why are we on a similar gastric wavelength?

  3. We ate at the Greek Festival and that was really Garys loss. I had a lamb shank and Tom had kabobs and we took home a box of Galataborikos (custard to die for). We just left the blues festival which was a lot of fun.

  4. Zayrina – Well, we did had some cheese phyllo, but mainly it was desserts. I like Greek food but not the desserts (Except for…dipples? and the custard Jo mentioned). Don’t they know about chocolate?Caroline – The Applebees (prepare to freak out) has no kitsch on the walls. They have some kitchsy wallpaper with some prints hanging off it. I think I’d only eat at Bellas again for the toasted ravioli, because the seafood pasta and the bacon sandwich were just enh. But the t-rav was tremendous.Jo – Hey! I had galataborikos too. That was really good.I’m curious to know what festival has the Blue Angels flying over my house repeatedly.

  5. The Blue Angels were cool. I experienced 5 straight days of them since I was working at home during their rehearsals Thursday and Friday. Scared the crap out of me the first time, but then I went out and watched for a while. It was nice to see the show without paying or dealing with crowds.

  6. Friend #3 – You have that great view. See? It’s a good condo.Caroline – The Blue Angels make me nervous on TV. I couldn’t watch it in person.sue – Yes! It was sweet.
