An Open Letter to My Husband

Dearest Gary,

You will never know how much your participation in these party preparations has meant to me. For example, when you came home with these cleaning supplies, it meant a lot.

See how shiny and new they are? And pretty and clean. Especially clean. Because you can’t make a bathroom look like new with old tools. And this purchase gives me faith that you will indeed clean the bathroom. (One little concern: these tools are resting up and gaining strength in the master bathroom, while the guest bathroom is the one our guests will use.)

I also like the way when I said, “People will be here in four hours, were you thinking of cleaning the guest bathroom?” you responded by going downstairs and vacuuming the basement. I’m sure the basement needed this, because it is an unfinished basement and I don’t believe it has ever been vacuumed. And if any of our guests suddenly fall down the basement steps and regain consciousness there they will be struck by how clean it is.

  1. Laughed when I read this. It’s exactly what Jay would have done.”People coming – where’s worst dirty – aha! – basement – clean basement – me good boy.”

  2. You know it’s all because of those conversations he has in his head, right? Where the You in his head told him that the Basement was disgusting and you would be MORTIFIED if any of the guests were to sneak down there and SEE it?

  3. *thump thump tumble thump* Ow… Ooh… Shiiit…. Owwww… Where am I? Oh, wow! What a clean basement!

  4. Arrgh! Men! Mine usually cleans something that I cleaned the day before and feels like a saint about it. Then gets mad when I suggest that cleaning something else may be a bit more helpful. Arrgh!

  5. In the dozen or so times I’ve been at your house, I’ve never seen a guest venture into the basement. The guest bathroom was quite satisfactory, though. Rebecca proclaimed it very funny.

  6. Silk and Sarah and Juibleu – ha! I think it’s because if they cleaned the dirty stuff they would be doing what we asked them to do. And in their minds, that’s the same as doing what they’re “Told.” Can’t have that.Sherri – I bet that’s it. “Gary, you are sooooo great. You are the best basment cleaner ever!”Caroline and Friend #3 – Thanks for coming! After you left, Lea and I did go into the basement, seriously.

  7. Men!Your tea party looks fantastic. What a great idea. I’d love to do something like that where all the guests were expected to wear hats (and maybe gloves, too).

  8. Oh, yeah, so would I! When I started the tea years ago, people did wear hats and gloves and pearls. And they RSVP’d earlier than the day before. But frankly, I got tired of being the Tea Bitch and demanding people behave.
