During our conversation about Masons this weekend, Mom reminded me we were also in the Daughters of the American Revolution. At least, we were invited, a relative had done all the footwork and traced us all back to some civil servant who worked with George Washington when he was a surveyor.
I don’t know if Mom filled out the paperwork. She threatened to fill it out on behalf of the closest thing we had to a next generation: my dog Fred. “Dogs of the American Revolution!”
I don’t know what set Mom against the DAR, perhaps it was when Eleanor Roosevelt resigned, but I can’t think of them without picturing the Grant Wood painting:

I’m the one holding the teacup, that’s Mom on the right, and Aunt Rosemary had to put a shirt over her tube top to sit for the painting.

That’s cool. I’ve always been fascinated by early American history, etc. and wished I could have grown up in a house that had old oil paintings of my relatives over the mantelpiece.
How funny! A painting of a painting!Does this entitle you to dress up in a bonnet and talk in an Olde Tymey way?
Rhea – Me too! That’s not actually us, I was kidding. Grant Wood is the artist who did American Gothic. We do have an old, old photo of ancestors sitting and not smiling. They don’t look as condemning as the ladies in this painting, though.Taster – I didn’t even notice, but there is a painting in the background of that painting. Good eye!
