Here’s an update on the nightstand bookpile:
1. Marley and Me. Done. The dog DIES. I was sobbing at the end.
2. So, for something more cheery, I started Night. Note to self: don’t read books about the Holocaust before being evaluated by the Neuropsychiatrist. It did make me want to read Night II, or whatever book Elie Wiesel uses to explain how on earth he got his faith back.
3. Passages – wow, that is one dated book. Tiresome.
SO…next? I’m thinking Assassination Vacation. Unless I discover it’s a serious book about death.

I fell back on the couch and sobbed for half an hour at the end of Marley and Me. They should put a warning label on that book.
Elie Wiesel was also very vocal and adamant about urging Bush to pursue the Iraq war, fearing it was another evil dictator on the verge of holocaust. Huh. I wish he hadn’t done that.
Just a suggestion; My Sister’s Keeper. It is about a younger sister who was concieved scientifically and specifically engineered to be a biological match for her older sister who had a terminal disease. In short, she was concieved to be used as spare parts. The plot goes through her journey and the impact upon her family when she finds her independance and decides to emancipate herself. It is serious, but well written with a plot twist and great character development. Do you like murder mystery/thriller books? I’ve got tons of these you can borrow.
Uh, Thanks for ruining Marley and Me, Queen. Of Ruiners.God.
Go for Assasination Vacation — it’s totally interesting and amusing, and despite a lot about, well, assasinations, it’s funny and will be the perfect pick-me-up after all of that other reading you’ve been doing. I read it this summer at the job where they didn’t actually have any work for me and let me read all day at my desk, and I’d find myself trying to contain my snorts of laughter.
Yeah, what melati said.** crosses Marley and Me off of reading list **
People: name a book featuring a dog in which the dog does NOT die.
I read a Nancy Drew book last night. Yes, that’s right. I regressed right back to a 9 year old girl. All the good people end up happy. All the bad people get what they have coming to them. and the lovely red headed heroine is loved by all and gets a convertible for her 18th birthday. Bitch.
Does the dog have to be a main character?Because I can name lots of books with dogs in which they do not die.Lots.
Yes. In fact one of the most effective ways to euthanize a dog is to begin writing a book about it.
Does Disney’s “The Fox and the Hound” count? Because the hound didn’t die, he just ended up being separated forever from his best friend, Tod the fox, because they weren’t the same and thus couldn’t and shouldn’t be friends…OH.Sniff.F you, Disney. Sheesh.
Uh, thanks for ruining The Fox and the Hound for me, Catherine. Snort.
Yeah, Catherine. You people are a bunch of plot killers.
Assaniation Vacation Spoiler Alert: Abraham Lincoln dies even before the book starts.
