It just occurred to me, does no one pray to Jesus? Is Jesus just totally dissed in the praying process? I know Baptists (and possibly other religions) tack “In-Jesus’-Name-We-Pray” on the end of all their prayers, but I don’t think that counts, since it makes it quite clear they are praying to God.
What about Catholics? I asked Gary and he rolled his eyes. I asked for specific backup prayers, akin to “Hail Mary” (addressed to Mary) and “Help Me Triumph Over the Poor Housing Market” (addressed to Saint Joseph).
He sighed and said in a tone of utter contempt, “You KNOW Jesus is part of the Holy Trinity. If you pray to God, you pray to Jesus and – the Holy …Other…thing.”
This got me all worried about the Holy Ghost/Spirit (who I still mentally see as Jesus’ Mom. Not to slight Mary.) No one even mentions her. We can’t even agree on what to call her. Him. It. And if someone strikes me for my irreverence, who will it be?
Gary wound up by saying “You know we say the Lord’s Prayer all the time.”
“Sure” I said, “In vain repetition as the heathens do. And Jesus just wrote it.”
“Jesus Christ!” Gary exclaimed. “There you go.”
