A slice of life

“ELLEN WHY DON’T YOU TAKE A DAILY VITAMIN LIKE I DO?” Gary demanded.

“I did, but the neurologist wants me on extra Vitamin D, and with that added to the multivitamin I was taking I ended up with too much of that vitamin.”

“WHICH VITAMIN?”

“D.”

“THERE IS NO VITAMIN D.”

“Yes,”[sigh] “there is.”

“I’VE NEVER HEARD –“

“Alexa, is there a Vitamin D?”

Alexa said, “Yes, vitamin D exists. It’s a group of fat-soluble compounds that help increase calcium absorption and maintain bone health.”

“WHAT DOES THE D STAND FOR?”

“Dumbass?” I thought. “Does it stands for dumbass?”

“DUMBASS! I CAN SEE YOU THINKING IT!” Gary roared, and I had to laugh because he can see what I’m thinking, but also because I can see the future. I knew that in the next few hours, Gary was going to become our house’s foremost expert on Vitamin D, how it’s metabolized (LIVER!), what foods are the best source of Vitamin D (FISH!), and on and on for houuuurrrrs.

Then, while he added up all the D in all three of the foods he eats, I thought, “What’s to keep me from asking how much Vitamin Z is in his soup? Vitamin Z is vital for your spine. Really, your soup can doesn’t even list the amount of Z?”

  1. Oh wooow. Have fun in your Journey Through Vitamin D with the New Expert when he emerges?
(I assume you know that you can tweak how much vitamin D you’re getting by 1. picking a different dosage and 2. skipping days? I tend low on D because I do not see much of the sun, so I am entirely food/supplemental, and it takes repeat testing to find the dosage/schedule that lands me within the vitamin D range bounds. But anyway, odds are good that you could take a daily vitamin with D and adjust the vitamin-D-only supplementation, if you wanted to.)
(that said YES vitamin D appears to be important, esp. for not acquiring additional autoimmune garbage, and also I am not a medical professional, etc., talk with a doctor and get lab work and then follow-up lab work after you’ve been on a schedule for a month or two, etc.)

  2. KC – It was quite the negotiation to get the neurologist and the GP to agree on how many vitamin D I take. But that’s a good reminder to update my medications on the list at the GP’s office so that they know we’re jacking with it.
