I went in to work today because the new air conditioner / heater / water heater / air “scrubber” / humidifer / dehumidifer / thermostat / atom splitter was to be installed today. Gary stayed home and dealt with the details.
He called at two.
“What’s up? Is the air conditioner done?” I said.
“It’s beautiful… ” he breathed. “It’s like something you’d see in a spaceship. And it’s so tiny, and you won’t believe it, that’s not even the best part — “
“What’s the best part?”
“The owner’s manual. It’s … it’s in color.”

This is a marvelous conversational exchange. It has brought me joy.
We recently bought a new dishwasher. My husband, who never ever reads the owner’s manual, and in fact scoffs at such documents, this time read it from cover to cover, and insisted on reading parts of it out loud to me.
I don’t know if it is in color.
I have to wonder what air conditioners in spaceships really look like.
Common Household Mom – the thought that you have a husband who has changed for the better and reads manuals brings me great joy.
