TWIL: Columbia

When I think of the Columbia Space Shuttle, I obviously remember when the shuttle broke up on re-entry.

This week I learned that the Columbia had three additional deaths. Early in its history, a compartment in the Columbia was filled with nitrogen to make it safer when there were lots of other gasses floating around. The nitogen should have been purged before anyone walked in, but because the procedures had recently changed, five workers walked in and inhaled nitrogen, not air. One died almost immediately, another died after a few weeks, and a third died years later.

It’s remarkable that they would fill any compartment with any gas, especially after Apollo One.
