Cat: Got some splining to do

Gary loves it when Goldie sits on the windowsill like a Halloween decoration. Sadly, I noticed that Goldie has been slowly snipping away at the window screens, and has almost tunneled through.

This means I need to purchase more durable screens. I thought Amazon would provide a selection of sizes, but it seems that all you need is a roll of pet-strength screen material and some device called a “spline” and you do it yourself.

Seriously. I don’t want to do it myself. Now I’m going to have to buy and trash a perfectly good screen to practice “splining”.

Has anyone tried this?

  1. I’d bet there’s someone local to you who can do it readily. (I’d probably check with window companies first, unless there’s someone who Just Does Screens.) Bonus: you would not have a roll of leftover screen to deal with.
That said, I don’t know that they’d do it any better than you would. and you might need either a re-up of this window or another window at some point, so that roll of leftover screen might come in handy…
(in concept, it’s really straightforward: there’s a groove that the spline is held firmly by, so it’s just making the screen smooth and then pushing the spline into its holding-groove. *BUT* I’ve never personally done it, so I don’t know the directions it can go funky in.)

  2. KC – It’s pretty inexpensive to buy the supplies and do a bit of practice. I’ll try that first. Happily it’s cold enough Gary isn’t opening the windows.

Comment, even if you aren't on WordPress. Make up a name. Fine by me.
