TWIL: Cough Drops

How long have I been using Halls cherry cough drops? Decades?

This week I learned they have inspiring mottoes on the paper.

On further research I find that people take umbrage because the mottoes seem to encourage you to get back to work. “March forward” is the only one with a pro-work message on mine.

I checked another and it told me to push on, to be unstoppable, and inspire envy.

So cough drops now sound like my Dad. Next they’ll say, “If you’re too sick to go to school you’re too sick to have fun.”

  1. I feel like cough drops that tell you to be unstoppable and push on are sending the wrong message to people who should *stay home from things while contagious* but that’s just me (… okay, maybe not *just* me, but also all the time-loss research about how people who are sick don’t function as well at work and get others sick and thus typically end up costing companies more than if they put their effort into getting better and *then* returning to work).

  2. KC – I have caught many work viruses, most memorably the RSV a few years ago. I agree, these mottoes seem a little like Brave New World. Spending is better than mending!
