Post Closing Day

There have been a few loose ends after selling the house of my youth.

  • A few hours before closing I started to get weepy and forced myself to think bad thoughts about the house, and that led to thinking bad thoughts about my youth. I spent some awful teenage years in that house. Cheered me right up.
  • Closing day I was around at least seven people not in my bubble, what with signing forms and cashing the check. Of course I started sneezing the next morning. Runny nose, felt like a bad cold. You know, just like Covid. I took a home test, came out fine. My cold shuddered at that nasal swab and cleared up instantly.
  • Two days after that I was driving back from delivering some old manuals to the front porch of the old house and felt an overwhelming sense of freedom. Not my house anymore, not my problem anymore. And frankly, the renters put that house in better shape than when they got it.
  • Some identity theft software I had utterly forgotten about alerted me that someone might be transferring the deed illegally.
  • I am still getting postcards offering to buy my house. Still.
  • Given that my chest pain started the day after the realtor said the loan went through, I was certain it would go away the day after closing. No such luck.

  1. Congratulations on the sale! There’s a lot to be said for no longer having to worry about a house you don’t live in. We had one of those for a time because my husband had a hard time emotionally with letting go of his pre-marital house. It was sitting vacant because he didn’t want to be a landlord and owning it was purely a financial and effort drain. I finally offered to do it all from start to finish except for the things he had to do himself (signing things, for the most part). Found a good realtor, got some things repaired, put it on the market, and: done. It’s been 1.5 years, and he still talks about how great it is that he doesn’t have to worry about that house anymore.

  2. Alice – I thank you, and i am also looking forward to many years of not worrying about the house. And congrats to your husband for letting you do him that favor, I know a husband who would just say “don’t nag me, I’m going to get to it” for a decade at least.

Comment, even if you aren't on WordPress. Make up a name. Fine by me.
