Human Petri Dish

From NPR, February 5th:

An immune suppressed man in Boston caught Covid and didn’t get over it. He couldn’t, because the virus kept mutating inside his body. They sequenced the genomes while the poor man took five months to die, and they found twenty different mutations. Now that the global mutations are in the news, this man’s story is being told.

Even if you don’t read the link, go there for the graphic that looks like Elmo is dangling like a bunch of grapes and Cookie Monster is trying to eat his hand.

  1. That also sticks a bit of a fork into the “well, survival of the fittest” people, because hey, while the Fit Person could kill the Immunocompromised Person, the Immunocompromised Person could host an internal virus convention and kill the Fit Person right on back.
That said, I think if this becomes very public, the result will probably be people avoiding immunocompromised people more, which would be irritating and shunning and possibly a definite problem in some cases *BUT ALSO* really helpful from the continued pandemic “stay away from me, thanks!” point of view…
And hey! It also means that I’m not just protecting myself and protecting our local hospital’s resources by hermit-crab-ing! I’m also specifically avoiding hosting a mutation party! Yay!
