Kentucky Derby, Kind Of

Like Dave from Blogograhy was saying, sometimes there are so many CoVid diversions that you don’t have time for them all.

That happened to me on Saturday when the second Steven Page Zoom concert conflicted with the virtual running of the Kentucky Derby. NBC Sports set up a fake derby between all the Triple Crown winners. I had to see my boy Secretariat win the virtual race, given he still holds the record in all three races of the Triple Crown.

I wore the Celebrity Hat out to the backyard to pick some weedy fuzzy scrub mint for my mint julep. It had three ounces of bourbon, which tasted very nice over some ice I made and crushed, and only gave me a little headache.

Then I went back in and watched the concert. I am sure no one on Zoom noticed me slyly watching the race on my phone for about two minutes. (Spoiler – Secretariat won.)

Toward the end of the concert Steven Page asked the 800 people on the Zoom to unmute and sing along with The Chorus Girl. (Because as he will tell you in his Ted Talk, that’s the most important part.) It was hilariously bad. Picture a Demon Chorus singing ‘la la la laaah la.’ So, still with the delightful screw-ups, only this time it involved the audience screwing up. Fun for everyone!

  1. That is faaabulous. I’m glad Celebrity Hat got to have some time in the sun.
(I assume you did not wear Celebrity Hat to the concert? Or did you?…)

  2. KC – I did wear CH to the concert. Someone else wore a cheesehead hat in honor of the derby.

  3. Oh, that makes me happy. 🙂
Does Celebrity Hat like cheese, and if so, does Celebrity Hat like all cheeses, only fancy European cheeses, or only down-home Wisconsin cheeses? (or does she like anything *except* the particularly moldy ones and the ones fondly referred to as having a “barnyard” aroma? I *might* have something in common with Celebrity Hat!!!)

  4. I should have known I was too much of a Commoner to have any real connection to Celebrity Hat. Sigh. I can only admire from afar… 😉

  5. No, no, not Just Like Us; the key point is Just Like We *Could* Be if we bought the products that they endorse!
(or am I out of touch with modern celebrities?)

  6. KC – I think Stars – They’re Just Like Us is a regular feature of US magazine. This speaks well for your taste in magazines.

  7. AH! Uh. Yeah. My knowledge of pop culture is… not impressive.
(is the feature satirical, chronicling their private jets and their recent frustrations over the diamond necklace they *wanted* not being exactly what was for sale and saying “we’ve all been there; when you knock over your $800 bottle of vodka and the establishment is totally out and they *only* have $400 vodka left, sigh” – or does it capture them doing actual-person things like putting money in a parking meter or applying sunscreen or something?)

  8. Ah. Fascinating.
(was anyone actually under the impression that stars are not, in fact, human beings [but with an enormous set of priority-warping pressures, constraints, community views, and financial freedoms which make their chosen behaviors and outlooks on problems very different from “us”]?)

  9. KC – let me just say, you never saw Michael Jackson in Stars – They’re Just Like Us.

  10. I suppose a photograph would not really communicate “wishing to be slightly different than you are” very well, which is the first (and possibly only, aside from the presumed eating, drinking, [before the end stages of his life] sleeping, etc.) one I can come up with.

  11. KC – usually it is stars pumping gas or buying coffee. Neither are MJ activities. Sad about the sleeping.

Comment, even if you aren't on WordPress. Make up a name. Fine by me.
