Disaster Tally, Ho-hum

A week ago there was an earthquake in Salt Lake City, which is not an earthquake area, is it? It reminded me that at the end of February, I woke up and felt a funny vibration. It wasn’t enough to make me leap out of bed, just something subliminal enough to make me start thinking about earthquakes.

I have been in two St. Louis earthquakes, the one in my twenties that rattled the cupboards in our new apartment, and the one that hit a week after Mom died and made the lawyer’s walls sway.

Later that day I found out that the funny vibration was indeed a baby 2.7 earthquake. Still counts though, so now I have survived three earthquakes, one tornado, and a global pandemic. Early days, though, with the pandemic.

Oh, who knows. We are all poised on the brink of death. I know three people who have been poised there for years. Perhaps you get used to it.

  1. There was a tornado in my home town when I was a baby and there was a tiny earthquake here a few years ago, so sort of same. I also came very close to walking off a cliff late at night while drunk in Jamaica and not remembering that it’s a less safety-conscious region than Canada. Maybe I’m on borrowed time already.

  2. Allison – oh good god, Allison, the image of anyone just wandering off a cliff in the dark is terrifying. I just … I can’t even think about it. Glad you survived.
