Young College Man of the Week

Well, last week at the college campus, I met a young man who was concerned an elderly woman (me) was out in the cold, and this week I met another young man.

I thought he was Matt, the youngest man in my class, and I thought he was heading for my building, so I waved cheerily and said, “Hi! I think you’re in my class!”

“I don’t think so.”

Don’t read that as “Why, you might be, but I don’t think so.” Instead read it as:

(Snort) “Ha. I don’t think so.”

I initially took it as “You are several decades to old to be in my class,” but now that I think about it for the thousandth time, it could mean “You are not in the same social class as I,” so that’s another nice twist.

I need to stop speaking to young college men. But then, I kind of like experiencing social unsteadiness: it keeps me young.

  1. I suspect not social class, but that he has had zero classes with anyone outside his age bracket yet, is new to this, and has not realized that Continuing Education or people otherwise returning to take classes outside the 18-22 age bracket is a real thing (and a source of great encouragement to professors tired of people taking their classes to simply check off requirements for their desired piece of paper).
And thus, snort-no, I’m not here for Chair Aerobics or whatever it is you’re here for, I’m here for “real classes” which… yeah, is pretty obnoxious, actually…
I suppose exercises in keeping your balance are helpful, but they are often somewhat unpleasant…

  2. KC – I’m sort of looking forward to this weeks class, just to see what subtle shade will be thrown.
