My community college writing class has started. I was apprehensive that I would be the odd duck, older than everyone else, writing the wrong type of book, but as it turns out everyone one of us is atypical. There are seven of us.
Gender: 5 women, 2 men.
Age: 2 in their 20s, 1 in his 30s, rest of us over 40.
Process: I appear to be the only one who believes in outlines. No one else seems to want to know where they’re headed. The characters will evidently just do things as you type and you go with it.
Experience: one woman published a book in the ‘90s, a few have finished books but not published them, there are several books that don’t have endings, and one woman has a book full of book ideas. No one else had a rambling unstructured saga dropped in their laps.
When they were discussing my weird situation the class used words like Therapy and Closure, so I had to correct them. My working title is now The Spite Novel, as I intend to improve it out of pure spite.
