Derby Drama

BULLSHIT! THIS IS SOME GANGSTER BULLSHIT!” – Gary, after the Kentucky Derby reversal, in which the Kentucky Derby winner had his victory given to the second place winner.

Upon instant replay, the favorite was found to have strayed from his lane and evidently had to be penalized.

I personally was rooting for the pink-masked Japanese horse, and for Code of Honor, who was pretty. For a moment I confused the names of Code of Honor and Colony House, the eventual winner, and thought my horse had won on appeal.

I think everyone knew something was up when the usual blonde reporter jockey was not the first to interview the winner. Instead, the broadcast showed the trainer giving a pep-talk to the jockey, who was having none of it. It ended with the trainer telling the jockey something like, “It’s fun, it’s a game, enjoy it.”

Just as I thought, “Who is this yokel?” — the reporter on horseback showed up and the first thing the jockey said was, “The crowd scared him. He’s just a baby.”

Then the outcome was challenged, and the first thing the jockey said was, “The crowd scared him. He’s just a baby.”

Then the outcome was reversed and they didn’t even show the jockey’s face, which I felt was good form. Of course, I don’t know why newscasters give more personal space to jockeys than, say, tornado victims, but I guess that’s just how we do.

Gary was fairly open-minded about it until he found out the odds for the favorite were 4-1 and the odds for the eventual winner were 65-1. Now he blames the mob. It’s a regular Black Silks Scandal.
