Before I begin, I want to make sure I define my terms. Hot flash: You get warm, then hot, then hotter than you have ever been, then twice as hot as that. That’s a hot flash, right?
Before this weekend I have had ONE hot flash in my life, perhaps a year ago. But for that, up till now, nothing.
During this weekend I have had FOUR hot flashes.
I took my temperature during one of them. 96.5. Lower even than my norm of 97.
Ironically, Gary wanted to know if I was pregnant because I seem to be nesting, what with the basement and garage gutting. I think of nesting as acquiring sticks for the nest, not purging unwanted sticks and sweeping. De-nesting.
I know at 11 my boobs showed up over 7 days. Perhaps I can knock out this menopause thing in a week as well.

Yes, oddly, core temperature is not affected by what we here term hot flushes (a hot flash is something *entirely* different) – which is just as well, really, or your brain would fry.
Big Dot – flushes sounds more accurate, since it seems to focus just on my head and face. I checked: my skin somehow doesn’t seem to redden. What is a hot flash then?
I always thought I should be losing weight during my year of hot flashing. After all heat is an indication of energy transfer. Sad to report it did not work that way.
Welcome to menopause territory. Everyone goes through it at different rates. I had hot flashes for a couple of years and then they were all gone! At 49! Done! But they started up again last month…
So get used to saying, “Is it hot in here or is it just me?”
I had a total hysterectomy in 2008 and have had serious issues with hot flashes and heat intolerance ever since. they say it can last a decade. Yeefreakinghaw.
I went through menopause at your present age and did not have many symptoms. At that time, the drs. were pushing hormones, and most of my friends were taking them. So glad I resisted!
Arlene – Evidently you aren’t burning calories, the veins in your head dialate and you feel your hot hot blood more than usual. Just more aware of ones average hotness.
Suburban correspondent who hates feeling like Edith Bunker – I keep thinking of Edith telling Archie to Stifle it.
Zayrina – A DECADE? Oh, screw that.
Hattie – I remember there was a controversy about hormones a few years ago – they increase your risk for breast cancer, is that it?
QUEEN: Yes, in particular the estrogen progesterone combo. You might want to read up on the studies, which were pretty convincing. And once the docs stopped prescribing it so much the breast cancer rate among older women went down. A lot.
Hattie – I remember my ob-gyn 20 years ago said I could stay on birth control pills the rest of my life, even if I didn’t “need” them. I take it thinking has changed.
And, by the way, I have had no hot flashes since that weekend. I think that means I knocked out menopause in a week.
