Woo!

What is it in human nature that makes us cheer when our hometown is mentioned? You know, David Letterman mentions someone was cheated by a congressman from, say, Detroit, everyone from Detroit screams.

I’ve done it. I was at the Smithsonian watching one of those new-fangled IMAX films 20 years ago, saw a glimpse of the Arch and found myself screaming. Because someone in the anonymous audience of complete strangers might not know I’m from Saint Louis.

Or, say, someone from the United Way is at your small company meeting listing the organizations that are helped by the United Way, including the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, the National MS Society –

“Woo!” I cheered.

It started out in a fairly normal decibel level, but I almost immediately smothered it. Not soon enough though, because Friend #3 spun around, poked her finger at me, and snorted “Blog that!”

  1. I dunno why it is, but I always get a tiny thrill when I see someone from my hometown listed in the letters to the editor section of a magazine, too. Recently I saw Willard Scott wish a 107 YO woman who lived in my town a happy birthday.

  2. I’m a fan of any situation that might warrant a hearty “woo!”. Like, say, the opening of a new Target less than 5 blocks from one’s home. WOO!

  3. I’m weird in that I get all excited when I read the words “Iowa” or any city IN “Iowa” in a book. You’d be surprised how many times it is referred to… usually as the place the sweet-young-thing-turned-hooker-and-got-killed came from or the place NO ONE wants to go to, but it still makes my heart go pitter-pat a itsy bit faster. Oh, yeah… I’m from Iowa. (Duh)

  4. Don’t cha love it when the Beach Boys are singing, “California Girls” and all the crowd substitutes, “Colorado” in all the “California” places? Woo! Indeed. Did I mention I was from Colorado? Yeah, Baby, wish they all could be Colorado girls!

  5. Melissa – I know! I like the letters to the editor in the St. Louis Post Dispatch taht have been sent from Florissant, where I grew up.snowy – Oh, woo for that! I can’t get over the big remake of Target (well, like 10 years ago). Of course, they need to expand their plus-size department, and move it away from Maternity, because I keep seeing maternity clothing I want.sue – a song to make you go Woo: https://genius.com/The-travelling-salesman-main-title-rock-island-iowa-stubborn-lyrics
Meriwether Lewis – Well, I was in a giggly mood yesterday. I blame that.judith – The crowd does that? That’s cool!

  6. I’m surprised you even know of this singer. She’s been in town and I’ve seen her in concert, as well as owning the CD (of course) and YES I did get excited the first time I heard the song! LOL!

  7. sue – Boy, I wish I could say I knew her … or even of her .. but she’s the first person I found when I googled “lyrics Ohio.” LOL back atcha.
