H&M applies more pressure

This is a Facebook ad for a tiered chiffon skirt from H&M.

“That’s a man modeling that skirt,” I thought, and it might be. H&M has started hiring trans people to model clothing.

I love the inclusion, I do. But wasn’t it bad enough that I had to look as good as a model to look good in one of their skirts, now I’m expected to look as good as a man?

  1. That is a funky ensemble choice (personally, I think odds are decent the model is just going for Standard Model – Waif Edition with short hair). The skirt is amazing, though. But I’d like to see more photos of it to know how it moves and how it behaves itself when one is *not* standing like a model (in heels that high, ouch).

I’ve been enjoying what a few companies have been doing in having more than one model in each thing, and listing which size each model is wearing.

But my ideal would be for them to take photos of people *actually wearing* the things in the sorts of contexts one would wear them, in addition to modeling the things. What does this look like if you are sitting down? trying to get out of a car? eating a sandwich? dancing/working/whatever-the-outfit-will-likely-be-used-for?

  2. Hm. Identity autocomplete has weird ideas sometimes about things.

I guess I am used to “transgender” usually being specifically Definitely Feminine-Presenting or Definitely Masculine-Presenting and waif models in short haircuts don’t read as either to me, but yes, you’re probably right!
