I was in bed at nine o’clock last night when I realized I had forgotten to go to the dentist. I was supposed to have contacted him sometime during the day — way before nine o’clock at night — because I’d had some dental work, and one element of it had to be removed. He had installed a plastic button in my jaw that blocked the pain. It was quite cunning.
A flat button with a recessed rotary twist to turn the pain on and off. I was way overdue to have it removed. And he’d been very specific about when I needed to call, I remembered that.
But, before I texted him to apologize for forgetting, I thought, “I need to take a photo of this for the blog.” I gingerly touched my jaw … and there was no button.
No button! I was astonished.
Then I checked the clock and it was not nine at night, it was three in the morning, and it was the most ornate anxiety dream I have ever had.
What on earth am I forgetting, subconscious?

… that is amazing. Also I would like that technology thankyouverymuch; maybe your brain is suggesting you should get inventing… 😉
I looked for a long time for a duplicate of how that switch was set up. It was like one of those things on flashlights when you have to stick a dime into the slot and twist to get it open. And I remember it was cool because he put it in before he started working on my jaw, so it was like a substitute for Novacaine and a substitute for Tylenol.
Love the specs of that button which, sadly, is yet to be invented.
PH – seems like if they have nerve blocks then there could be nerve blocks you could turn on and off.
Curious as to why one would turn the pain “on”, unless one is, in fact, a torturer or a masochist.
Rosie – I saw it as turning the sedative off, like how I will stop taking the tylenol at some point after dental work, just to see if I still hurt. That’s why I was gingerly touching my jaw.(Or I am a maschocist)
