Weekly Paint Progress: 6/5/2025

This week the Iris went from this:

… to this.

Ugh. And it looks worse. It’s important to remember it’s getting another wash of black (or dark blue, not sure) over the background. But it looks like I did nothing after working on it over an hour. And I tell you that right hand side is like the shroud of Turin. That’s not what I painted. It’s like the paint got sucked in to the canvas. Too much oil, I surmise.

  1. A medium where the oil balance can make it vanish or be varnish: yikes.
That said, the irises themselves look nice.

  2. KC – I should have seen it coming. The glaze is paint with extra oil, and Just as extra water would de-stabilize a watercolor painting, extra oil would do that to an oil painting. Then I did too much brushing and lifted the first layer of paint up into the brushes. Unlike watercolor, it’s easy to fix. I hope.
