I was watching The Late Show and saw a relentlessly positive interview with the star of the Sunset Boulevard revival.
This led to a work text discussion in which I typed the insufferably entitled statement, “I saw it in London in ’94 and I was not impressed.”
To be sure my memory was correct, I double-checked my scrapbook and saw that I was glad to have seen Betty Buckley and not Glenn Close and that I only liked one song, “With One Look.”
My work friend encouraged to revisit the musical, especially the lyrics, and I am here to say that I am a special type of stupid. It’s entirely revival-worthy.
Except for this troubling line:
“Nothing’s wrong with fifty / unless you/re acting twenty.” Norma Desmond is supposed to be fifty? A dozen years younger than I am right now? That’s a rough realization.
