Return of the Whistlepig

Gary recently reported that he saw a groundhog climb into a tree in the front yard.

Groundhog. Per Wikipedia, you may know them as “chuck, wood-shock, groundpig, whistlepig, whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonack, weenusk, red monk, land beaver, and, among French Canadians in eastern Canada, siffleux.” I can attest to whistlepig; I heard one whistling just that same evening.

I know them as the bastards who ate my morning glories one year.

And I just spent this spring winding a hyacinth bean vine up my arbor.

  1. … *climb* into a *tree*? Maybe it’s just that my primary personal experience with groundhogs was the grossly overweight Community Garden Groundhog (24/7 diet of carefully-grown organic produce!) whose rolls of fat undulated as he waddled, but it’s hard for me to imagine a groundhog being able to climb into a tree…
