The door rang. I was closest to the door, that’s the rule, so I opened it.
(That’s Gary’s rule. Recently Gary complained about all the rules I set for him, and I snorted because Gary dictates so many rules that there is nothing left to codify.)
The man on the porch handed me a pamphlet and said, “I’m John X______, and I’m here campaigning on behalf of Republican State Representative Joe _______. “
I could sense Gary tense up. He was triggered. Oh John X ______, I thought, you are at the wrong house.
I slowly handed back the brochure as I asked, “Oh, Republican did you say?”
He laughed and said, “Thank you for your time.”
It was a very genial exchange. I closed the door and Gary relaxed.
What would I have done if Gary hadn’t been there? I would have taken the brochure, read it for any signs of moderate leanings, and engaged the man in conversation on those topics just to watch him dance. Much more fun.
