Review: Argylle

I hate action movies. James Bond? Mission Impossible? Put me in one of those new comfy cinema seats and I am asleep at the first chase scene.

Are you the same? Does your spouse think you are odd for requiring dialog, or plot progression?

Well, enjoy your revenge when your spouse conks out an hour into this movie, and then later when he sounds much like you during a Bond film. “What was the POINT of the last ten minutes?” “Are we supposed to believe the cat/the building/the boat would survive that?” and “Wait, so that character is evil now?”

He was full-out writhing at the end, and in response I poked my finger in his face and said, “This is how I feel during every action movie you make me watch.” It was quite gratifying.

I don’t know why neither of us recognized that this was a parody. Perhaps because it wasn’t one? Or it wasn’t marketed that way?

I am pretty sure there won’t be the sequel promised in the puzzling cut scene. The reviews are pretty vicious.

  1. I am distinctly not a fan of action movies. I shun the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though it could be a great way to engage in conversation with my young adult children. It’s not so much that it puts me to sleep. Rather such movies make me anxious beyond words. I can’t even watch the final season of “The Crown” because I know what’s coming.

  2. Common Household Mom – interesting. I have a friend who cannot watch hockey games until it is over and she can see what the score is. She can only watch it IF she knows what is coming. So, do you avoid only the movies with the unhappy endings? So no Titanic, no Glenn Miller Story? What about It’s a Wonderful Life? Mom couldn’t get to the happy ending because she couldn’t take the scenes with the lost money.
Also, and this is unrelated, I am happy to see you were able to post a comment. I somehow found the spot in Typead where lost comments go to die. Instead of seeing just spam comments I noticed all my comments that don’t get posted, a comment from KC that was not posted though she tried three times because she used the word “supplements” and then about a dozen of YOUR comments, which I retroactively published. I suppose it’s the combo of common and household? It does sound like a spam term. Could you go by CHM?

  3. Fascinating re: where comments go to die.
I get physical symptoms from stress, so knowing how things come out is helpful, but also yes, there are those Things You Know Will Resolve But You Can’t Cope With In The Moment sometimes, too; your empathy is too rough.
Maybe, chronic illness obnoxiousness aside, this is like the scale of being easily amused vs. not, this scale of needing suspense to remain interested vs. drastically *not* needing suspense to stay interested?
Or needing plot/character progression vs. not. Or needing visually-exciting things vs. not. Or needing plausibility vs. not. I don’t know. Either way, not planning to add this movie to the “if I ever get better enough to be able to deal with moving pictures” list, but good to know it’s out there…

  4. The reviews HAVE been scathing. I would have been sad if I wanted to see the movie. I like action movies if they have snappy dialogue and wit and intelligent writing, so I do like some of the Marvel movies.

  5. Allison – Some of the Marvel movies were good. I like anything with that much charm. Bit, does charm buy you half an hour for a battle scene though at the end of that one Marvel movie where they brought in every character? Not in my book.

Comment, even if you aren't on WordPress. Make up a name. Fine by me.
