TWIL: Wallis

The hook: You know how Facebook will trap you with s loss-leader preview picture? Two thirds of an intriguing photo that does not appear in the linked article? (Bastards?)

Recently Facebook showed me half of a grim photo of Willis Simpson and just the edge of the claim that she had androgen something.

I Googled “androgen Wallis Simpson” because I didn’t want to scroll through clickbait, and found out that about ten years ago there was a book that speculated that she had androgen insentivity syndrome. People with that syndrome appear as female but do not have a uterus and can’t have children. (A pretty sweet setup if you ask me, but most people are not me.)

It’s an interesting idea. I thought at first of the outrage there would have been at the idea a potential queen who couldn’t provide an heir, much less a spare, late thirties or not. I mean, why even quibble that she was an American, or a divorcee? I don’t think they could have known, at the time, that she had this genetic trait, and ex-husbands wouldn’t have known either.

You know, it’s all speculation, but wouldn’t it be amazing if there was still some Wallis DNA out there? And then it could be proved definitively that she had the chromosome anomaly and that Queen Elizabeth was destined to be queen anyway?
