Difference

Forgive me if I’ve said this before, but I just can’t get over different the creation process is between painting and writing.

Draft one of a painting is the best part. It’s all, potential, and in some ways it’s the best. Clean, broad, loose.

Draft one of a book is shit. Fussy, overdone, useless.

I guess that’s because one is additive and the other is not. You add paint bit by bit and hopefully stop before you have messy garbage, and with a book you start with too messy garbage and scrape it off bit by bit.

The inky thing they have in common is that you want to stop adding or subtracting at the right point. I always seem to stop painting too early. I suspect I’m going to stop editing this draft of the book when its down to a haiku.
