Which do you prefer? New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day?
In my world, New Year’s Eve is better. First off, it’s an eve, and eves are at night when it’s dark and sparkly, whereas the days are in the harsh mid-morning light of early winter.
Still, I feel I should be more excited about the day, about the optimism of the New Year. Welcome to the hope instead of goodbye to what’s gone.
Maybe I need more New Year’s Day traditions. I read that some people clean house and stock the pantry, which sounds AWFUL. Others have handsome men cross the threshold to bring them luck, which I imagine I’d have to hire out just like the cleaning and the groceries.
I need to make plans on New Year’s Day. Optimistic plans.

I don’t do late nights so it’s NY Day for me – helped by being summer here so it’s usually bright, hot and sunny. Just went for a walk and a swim, people everywhere looking cheerful. I am though going to clean my fridge out later…
Big Dot – your New Years is sunny, we’re expecting an freezing rain here in Saint Louis. I heard in the news that fireworks were being discouraged in either NZ or Australia, and I momentarily wondered why. Of course, it’s wildfire season there — even though there are wildfires a few states over from me today.
No, the fireworks thing was to discourage gatherings. NSW is having a huge surge of Covid cases right now, and we’ve just had our first community omicron case (f-ing UK DJ here for a festival, who chose to break the rules RIGHT HERE ON WAIHEKE ISLAND). I was glad about the fireworks though because you’re right, wildfires are a possibility and we did have a small one nearby a few years ago, started by a smouldering rocket. Scary, especially seeing the awful scenes in Colorado today. Poor things.
Big Dot – NZ is so astonishingly proactive, it’s amazing the Omicron got in. I imagine they will put a huge tent over Waiheke island and then eventually push it out to sea.
