Health News

Dear Dr. House– Just STFU. This week’s episode made my husband ask me things like “Why didn’t you have a brain biopsy?” and “Really, you can die that fast from MS?” No! No, you don’t, no you can’t. It’s MRI, then if that’s inconclusive it’s a lumbar puncture, and then my god nobody gets a brain biopsy! Ever!

Octuplets-I was bitterly disappointed today to hear a false report that one of the octuplets was the size of a crouton. Were I the mother I would immediately pop that baby in my mouth and take a photo. But, sad to say, it’s a big fat one pound baby, so no really good photo ops for it beyond the standard baby in the veggie crisper image. Hmm. If I had a turducken I could do something with that, maybe.

Norovirus– I’m going to be Norwegian Cruise Line’s coal-mine canary next week. I will take my 2,000 white blood cells and see if their ship was adequately sanitized after the Norwalk virus outbreak on it earlier this month. Oh, and a bit of non-health related BNL Cruise news, here are the performers on the cruise :

These I know: BNL and all their side projects and variations, Sarah McLaughlin (Thanks .75 – she let me borrow a CD), Great Big Sea, The Weakerthans, Butterfly Boucher, The Odds, Sean Cullen (too funny), Gaelic Storm, Boothby Graffoe, and Dave Foley.

These I don’t know (let me know if any of these makes me worthy of envy): Another Kids in the Hall guy is there (Kevin McDonald), Luke Doucet, Mike Evin, Christine Fellows, Melissa McClelland, Sloan, and The Mountain Goats.

I fully expect to hear “OMG! U don’t know The Mountain Goats? OMG!”

  1. You know, I sit there and watch that show and marvel that I and 99% of all the other viewers happily lap up all that medical mumbo-jumbo as if it actually meant anything to us. It’s remarkable that the series ever got further than the drawing board. Sometimes I tune out the chorus of Lupus! MS! Auto-immune! and remember Hugh Laurie in the Elizabethan Blackadder.

  2. Craig Northey’s the guy from The Odds, I can’t think of when he was ever on Kids in the Hall, was he? I know he’s performing with Kevin McDonald, but I don’t think… heck. I don’t know.

  3. Big Dot – There was an issue of TV Guide or EntertainmentWeekly that interviewed doctors to see how accurate “House” was. The consensus: not. They must have a very weak-willed medical consultant. And I can never watch Miranda Richardson without thinking of Blackadder.Becs- If I need to strike up a conversation with him I will. And I’m sure his hair’s still long.Tami – Oh! I just assumed! Off to edit!

  4. Have a great time on the cruise. I went last year but decided not to go again because I was certain there was no way that the second time would be as good as the first (for me). That and the fact that Carbon Leaf and Guster weren’t coming this time, and I love them both almost as much as I love BNL. And I’m afraid I’d stalk Dave Foley and there’d be an international incident. Anyway…try to see Luke Doucet, he’s quite good. Great guitar player. I’ve never seen Sloan live, but have always enjoyed them when seeing them on tv (I get some Canadian tv here on the border) and radio. There’s one song playing quite a bit on the station I always listen to these days, but I don’t remember the name, that I LOVE. (so you’d think I’d remember the name, but no…) Hopefully you won’t contract any viruses on board. Wipe down all the possible icky surfaces in your cabin with clorox wipes (don’t forget the tv remote, door handles, all the bathroom surfaces…I know it sounds like overkill, but better safe than sorry!) and wash your hands a lot. Which I’m sure you know. You’re smart like that. And I agree with your STFU to Dr. House, but that’s another long winded comment for another day.

  5. I watched the ‘House’ episode called “Painless” on hulu.com. Haven’t seen the brain biopsy one yet. So it sounds like the House writers are stalking you and Gary? One week epilepsy, the next week MS? Hm.

  6. Kristie – Sigh. I will miss you.Becs – I know! I had a doctor tell me that hadn;t diagnosed anyone with abdominal epilepsy since the 60s.3 – Oh, whatever.

  7. Sloan is huge in Canada, if that’s worth anything. and the singer from the Weakerthans used to be in a punk band called Propaghandi. Also huge in canada. Wait, I’m sensing a thread here. Is the Cruise going to Canada or something??? 😉

  8. Also, my boyfriend and I have come up with a HOUSE drinking game. Drink any time the following happens:–Patient shits, vomits or pisses blood–House calls for a brain biopsy or some other medically unnecessary, overly risky surgical procedure–The doctors suggest it’s MS, Sarcoidosis, (pick your favorite rare but not immediately life-threatening disease)–MRI or other ridiculously expensive full-body scan–House eats a handful of pills, dry–Somebody calls House an asshole–House claims the patient is LYING!!! About SOMETHING!!!Make up your own rules! It’s fun!

  9. if people would just give me less interesting work more often I would not have fallen so behind in blogsurfing and would have made a timely response to your post. I am really into the MGoats and esp their album “The Coroner’s Gambit.” Powerful, haunting, evocative, and often disturbing. I hear they’re great live, too. This has been another installation of “day late, dollar short, and my pants are riding up, too.”

  10. dan – wow, the floppy-haired guy from the Mountain Goats loves the lead Weakerthan(so much so that it’s making it into a blog post on the way men compliment each other). He showed up on stage with the Weakerthans and did a fab clapping solo too. At the Songwriter’s panel he played a good song about Joan Crawford.

Comment, even if you aren't on WordPress. Make up a name. Fine by me.
