For years my friends and I frequented an eatery by work. It’s a well known chain where you can buy sandwiches and the Like.
One day I went in and the man behind the counter said, “Nice shoes.”
“Thanks,” I said, and my day was a little brighter.
Soon after, I frequented the establishment again.
“Nice shoes,” the same counterman said. “Huh,” I thought, “These are different shoes.”
One day I went with Hot Mom and Friend #3. Hot Mom got the nice counterman; I did not. While we were waiting for our food, #3 asked Hot Mom, “So?”
“Of course,” Hot Mom said casually, “I’m wearing my boots.”
In response to my puzzled face #3 explained, “There’s this guy here who has a thing about shoes.”
I was proud to announce that I was in the shoe club as well.
As it turns out, everyone is in the shoe club. If you are a woman, and you are wearing shoes, you get “Nice shoes.” One woman at the old office was sufficiently skeeved to complain to his management.
That was years ago, though. I went back to the old haunt for lunch today.
“Nice earrings,” he told me. Evidently he’s been closeted or he’s experimenting with new interests.

I always thought he was creepy – like the love child of Al Roker and Squiggy from LaVerne & Shirley.
Maybe he’s just got older and it’s easier to look at earrings than to lean over the counter to check out the shoes. Bit like finding bed better for nookie than the car.
It’s a compliment. I’ll take what I can get, even if it’s from Squiggy Roker.
One day at the Gum store I overheard two young women giggling about the man who had just complimented their shoes. I asked if they had just been to the eatery and of course they had.
3 – Hey. Sqiggy has MS. Dont mess with the MS peeps.Big Dot – You know, I think he checked out the shoes while you were in line. It was very subtle.Shania – That’s how I feel too. Feet and ears are at least more creative than tits and ass.Caroline – I hope they were at leaast 18.
Well, at least he had a love child with Al Roker in spite of his affliction.
I don’t suppose this could have anything to do with the size of the tip a well complimented woman might leave?
#3 – He is a noble, noble man. Who likes shoes.Judith – Nope. It’s a non-tipping type of place.
