I have the sweetest rose bush out in the back. Made sweeter the year it died all the way back, and I discovered you don’t grow plants, you grow roots. It came entirely back in that one year.
I always mean to prune it, and I never have the heart. It needs it, but I can never remember if roses grow on old wood or new wood.
And I love it, because it has the teensiest tiniest roses ever:

Tiny. The size of my thumbnail. Which needs a manicure.

(I was holding it gently, but still it seems like I’m a giant trying to tear the head off a long-stemmed rose.)
Oh, and since you asked: Graves you say? Resting place of Mom and Dad? Here they are under the Rock Mom gave me that says Laugh.

Are those columbines? I love me some columbines. Roses, too.
I don’t have the heart to prune anything either. I just let everything run rampant and pretend I’m going for the english garden look.
I have no idea why that came up as Bossy’s reader Shania. Obviously, I’m the Queen’s reader first and foremost. (Walks away backwards whilst curtsying, throws a genuflect in for good measure)
First, I am busy ROFL-ing over Shania’s genuflecting. Awesome.Have the roses always been tiny? Or have they gotten tinier as time passes? Because if so, you need to prune that baby ;)I love that garden though. It’s perfect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose Has a section on pruning roses. Usually the method I learned is to examine the canes/branches for leaves. If a cane is long with leaves only at the top, prune it to the bottom. If it has bare stretches, prune back to the first set of 3 leaves before the bare spot starts. Prune anything with spots or damage, and prune off dead blossoms. The idea is to direct the plants growth energy where you want it to form the shape of plant you want. Usually with shrub roses, this is a plant with close growing leaves and blossoms just on top of them. That said, I want to cry whenever I prune off a green cane. I’m a pruning wuss, even though I KNOW it makes better rose bushes.
Awww. They’re so cute! and I love the laugh rock gravesite. I think it’s perfectly perfect.
Becs – Yep, columbines. I love the self-seeding flowers. We had four-oclocks everywhere for a while there too.Sherri – I was heartless pruning Mom’s bushes, but it hurts to prune my own.Shania (OH, SHE’S BOSSY’S READER) – At my old job, I found the big bosses grandchildren were in charm school, and I had them curtsey too me for a good 15 minutes.Candy – But I like them wee! Will they get even smaller?Katie – Many people at work liked the extra Mint brownies I brought in, by the way. Thanks.

I love the columbines, but mostly love the rock that says “laugh” over your mom and dad’s “resting place”. Awesome.
Ellen, please hang on to your miniature roses–I about cried last week when I discovered the city of Akron tore out a block-long strip of mini rose bushes that had been in place and blooming for at least ten years. 🙁 Even though I can’t grow them, I like knowing that others can. Every bit of beauty in the world helps. And kudos on the “laugh” stone. The Queen Mum was amazing and that’s a perfect tribute.
Kirtie – Mom said she got us that rock because every time she came over to our house she would laugh.Jammies – Unh! Why did they tear them out? Google doesn’t even say.
