Here’s what happened Tuesday morning at my friendly neighborhood polling place:
Gary and I were almost at the front of the M-Z line. The only person in the A-L line finished her conversation with the A-L election official and left, which was the wrong direction to go it seemed to me.
A-L turned to my election official, M-Z, and said, “That was odd. She says she realized she grabbed her sister’s card by accident and voted with her name. She still voted.”
M-Z began shaking her head as if to ward off what she knew A-L was about to say. But it didn’t work.
A-L continued, “She told me how she voted. I guess we can just take it out of the tally at the end.”
M-Z was so horrified she couldn’t speak at first. She made the pointy prayer hands. Then she tucked her nose in them. That left her eyes peeping over her fingertips. She made the big eyes and stared them pointedly at A-L. After this full body horror presentation she finally spoke.
“We. Don’t. Destroy. Ballots.”
“Oh, no, I didn’t mean that,” A-L stammered. ” just mean we could subtract -“
M-Z made the big eyes so hard she vibrated. “We. Don’t. DO. That. EVER.”
A-L blushed. Oh, she claimed, I misunderstood. We don’t do that. M-Z repeated. Replay that five times. Finally M-Z turned to me since I next in line.
“Wink, wink,” I said.

The old ladies manning the polls where I vote sneered at me and announced to each other…”She is a D.”Oh well. I am not as upset as they are now that we D’s have control of the house!
I worked the elections on Tuesday, and accidentally let two people who had already turned in an absentee ballot vote again live.Oops.
That’s okay Carrie, I understand. Those two people probably made up for my in-laws WHO DID NOT VOTE. And did they forget they had turned in an absentee ballot? Mom voted that way – I don’t know how you could forget that.
I colored in my little circles (really – we’re regressing to 3rd grade Iowa testing to determine who controls the country) at the courthouse the Saturday before elections. Being concerned about what I was voting for, I researched the issues before going. I had a sick 2 year old in tow and managed to finish before any of the 15 or so people who arrived before me. I guess they were each seeing the issues for the first time?
