Divorce

A friend got divorced this week. Her need for sympathy is far surpassed by her need for irony, so she is going to have a divorce party.

I’m thinking I need to make a mix CD for this occasion.

Are there any other good songs to divorce by? NO weepy “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” songs. I’d prefer a nice “You suck!” motif for the CD. If I could write music I’d write a good driving rock song with lyrics like “You fool. You suck. I rule. Get …” etc.

So far I have:
I Will Survive …

…and there it stops.

Any suggestions?

  1. I highly recommend “Don’t Come Around Here No More” by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Alice in Wonderland party theme in which the guests eat the cake form of the Divorcee of Honor is entirely optional. You could also use Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” if you want a little Lindsay Buckingham in your life, and who doesn’t, really?I *would* recommend “D-I-V-O-R-C-E” by Tammy Wynette but it’s not a good F off and die kind of track. If I think of any other songs I will let you know.

  2. Is Alanis Morrisette too cliche? There is also a good song by Live called “Top” with the lyrics:Oh Hitler in your robe of truthMy emptiness has built your altarAnd I worshipped myself in you foreverUntil NOW!(These lyrics meant a lot to me when I was 19. I swear they come across cooler when sung.)

  3. When I think of more I will post em!1. Love Stinks – J. Geils Band2. Goodbye To You – Scandal3. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor4. Go Your Own Way – Fleetwood Mac5. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover – Paul Simon6. Hit The Road Jack – Ray Charles7. You’re So Vain – Carly Simon8. The Thrill Is Gone – B.B. King9. Time For Me To Fly – REO Speedwagon10. Release Me – Engelbert Humperdinck11. Sail On – Commodores12. Harden My Heart – Quarterflash13. I Hate Myself For Loving You – Joan Jett and The Blackhearts14. Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera) – Doris Day15. Here’s A Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares) – Travis Tritt16. Jive Talkin’ – The Bee Gees17. Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off – Harry Connick, Jr.18. Lonesome Loser – Little River Band19. Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves – Aretha Franklin20. I don’t Care About You – Fear21. Happy Trails – Van Halen

  4. You’re No Good — Linda RondstadtLove’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me — Juice NewtonGo Away — BlondieLeash — Pearl JamAlready Gone — The EaglesShe’s too Good for Me — StingIf You Could Read My Mind — 54 SoundtrackI’m on a roll but the baby is crying and duty calls! 🙁

  5. You all rule. How could I forget Hit the Road Jack? Time to go visit iTunes! I even know someone who works with Little River Band. Maybe they could come play at the DivorceSoiree. Some older bands play weddings and bar mitzvahs for a price. If I were planning this (ROBIN) I’d also include a pin-the-tail on the ex game. Or something worse.

  6. “Every Rose Has it’s Thorn” –Def Lepoard? (one of those 80’s hair bands)”This is not a Love song”- Madonna”Fire Door”–Ani Defranco (just about any Ani Defranco is good male hater stuff)”Hit me with your best shot”

  7. Every Rose has its thorn = Poison ;)Love bites -Def LeppardDie, Die, my Darling – MetallicaSounds like fun!!

  8. Your TF played “Born Free” for a solid six months before he walked away. But if there was a divorce party no one invited me.

  9. Queen Mom – You may not believe this. I remembered all the details of the eternal Born Free album, but until today I did not GET the HEAVY handed significance of the “Free” reference.Caroline – You AND your one hundred Peeps! You are the Princess of Peeps. Tell them they can come back anytime. It shall be a rocking party. I’m bringing the mix CD and the fresh nuts and nutcracker.

  10. ‘This diamond ring doesn’t shine for me anymore….and this diamond ring doesn’t mean what it did before…’I Hate Everything About You – Ugly Kid JoeI’m Still Standing – Elton John

  11. Mini-Me:Well of course I WANT to, but that would be rude. I always want to plan everyone else’s parties. It’s a very bad habit, and reason #402 of Why It’;s a Good Thing I Don’t Have Children, because I would so plan their weddings down to a detailed four page itinerary.

  12. MM,I’d love for you to plan my party because I’m busy and lazy. and because then if it sucks I can (and will) blame you.By the way, you listed the above reason ‘Why It’s a Good Thing I Don’t Have Children’ as #402, when in all actuality you quoted #426.

  13. How about (only if your desire to create an appropriate CD trumps your desire for good, credible music)Lonely – Britney Spears (this got me through a breakup. Sample lyrics include: “Think of all the times that I wasted, think of all the times that I took you back, ain’t no way I’ll be lonely, I don’t want to let you back in” and “My mind’s made up, I’m cool without you, you got no more appeal”)Survivor – Destiny’s ChildBye Bye Bye – N’SyncMaybe a little cheesiness would be good for a CD for a divorce party?!

  14. That Eat Me cake would work, yes. However, in my fantasy world, it would be a cake that looked like the Divorcee of Honor just like in the Tom Petty video for “Don’t Come Around Here No More” when they all ate the Alice cake.

  15. Many wonderful songs already suggested. Here are two more:1. These Boots Were Made for Walking ~ Nancy Sinatra2. Go Ahead and Split Mr. Amoeba Man ~ BettyWhat a wonderful idea for a party! Your CD may have to be a double CD set, or perhaps a boxed edition…

  16. Medulla – there is seriously a song called “Go Ahead and Split Mr. Amoeba Man?” And to make it even more intruiging, iTunes doesn’t have it AND a search for lyrics has “Lyrics removed” on every page! This song must be mine. Off to mySpace to hunt it down.—moments later –Ah! It’s on Amazon! Buying the whole CD based on the clip. Oh, and how could I not think of “It’s a Pose” – Nellie McKay?

  17. In this edition of Songs I Forgot To Mention In My Earlier Comments:”Caught Out There” by Kelis, because any song in which the chorus consists of a woman screaming “I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW” is all right by my book.

  18. The Queen~ Yes, Mr. Amoeba Man will astound you when you hear it. You’ll have to let me know what you think of the song. I’ve found many of the suggestions here wonderfully funny & always appropriate for your party/CD mix. Regards, ~ Medulla

  19. I know a couple of depressing Bonnie Raitt split-up songs that are good if the plan is an evening alone with a bottle of wine and a really good cry.
